- The aim of the course is to give a deep insight into the development of Portuguese and Brazilian literary froms mainly in the second half of the 20th century. The course accentuates the paralelism and the differences between the literary fields, the literary forms and the main tendencies of the Portuguese and the Brazilian literary canon. The course basically seeks answers for the question: which type of literary trends and forms gained relevance after the avant-garde phase of the modernist revolutions and which are the principal tendencies in prose, lyricism and drama both in Portugal and Brazil between 1930 and the millenium. Knowledge: Knows the rules and the different registers of the oral and the written Portuguese language and can apply them effectively according to the linguistic context. Knows the cultural particularities of the Portuguese language countries, is familiar with the main artistic and cultural tendencies of the Lusophone world and it’s main authors, oeuvres and manifestations, including the elements of popular culture. Acquires a high level of autonomy regarding the main specific questions of the field as well as their background and interpretation. Skills: Able to use the Portuguese language in a fluent and appropriate way according to the linguistic context. Aims to develop the ability of a knowledge-based, critical thinking within the students. Open to new methodologies of self-development. Attitude: Strives to teach the student respectful attitudes towards the perspective and values of others. Considers important to continuously develop the knowledge and skills of students. Gives special importance to develop high tolerance regarding different nationalities and ethnicities
- Course content
- The course follows the development of literary forms and tendencies in Portugal and Brazil after the avant-garde phase of the Portuguese and Brazilian Modernismo. In the Brazilian context the lectures depart from the regionalist northeastern novel and move on to the massive literary heritage of Guimarães Rosa and Clarice Lispector to finally arrive to the urban realismo of brutalismo (Rubem Fonseca, Dalton Trevisan). The course traces in parallel with the Brazilian tendencies the emergence of new literary forms and voices in Portugal such as the neorealist canon (Alves Redol, Fernando Namora, Carlos de Oliveira, Vergílio Ferreira), the Poesia 61 movement (Gastão Cruz, Luiza Neto Jorhe, Maria Teresa Horta, Casimiro Brito), the late modern experimentalism in prose, the post-modernism of Ruy Belo, Herberto Helder and Al Berto and the evolution of Portuguese drama from the 1950’s untill the millenium.
