- The aim of the course is to give a general view on the transformation of the idea of the nation and national identity through the main cultural and literary paradigms from Romanticism untill Post-Modernism. Knowledge: Has a language knowledge of at least C1 level. Knows the particularities of Brazilian culture, society and literature in the 19th and 20th century Knows the main authors and texts from the canon of Romanticism, Realism, Naturalis, Moderism and Post-Modernism Skills: Able to find, read, review and analyze theoretical sources regarding a the research area of 19th and 20th century Brazilian culture and literature Able to read and to interpret literary texts from the 19th and the 20th century Able to recognize the similarities and the differences between Brazilian national identity and other national identities Attitude: Considers important the cultural and the literary heritage of the 19th and the 20th century Recognizes how and why certain social and cultural discourses of the 19th and the 20the century define contemporary thinking in Brazil Knows the importance of social, racial and sexual emancipation
- Course content
- The idea of the nation and national identity haunts Brazilian literature since the moment of independence and the arrival of Romanticism when the post-colonial country tried to define and articulate it’s own distinctivness in terms of differences and similarities to Europe. The course, thus, follows the changes in the discourse of national identity through a series of literary text coming from Romanticism (José de Alencar: Iracema; Bernardo Guimarães: Escrava Isaura), Naturalism (Aluísio de Azevedo: O Cortiço; Adolfo Caminha: Bom Crioulo), Realism (Machado de Assis: Memórias Póstumas de Brás Cubas), Modernism (Mário de Andrade: Macunaíma), North-eastern Regionalism (Graciliano Ramos: Vidas Secas; Jorge Amado: Jubiabá) and Post-modernism (Guimarães Rosa: Grande Sertão: Veredas; Clarice Lispector: Paixão Segundo GH.).
