- The aim of the course is to map the main tendencies of contemporary Portuguese and Brazilian literature, to get to know the most prolific authors and the most paradigmatic texts of the contemporary literary scene, tracing the parallelism and the differences between the Portuguese and the Brazilian literary field. In the aftermath of José Saramago’s Nobel Prize Portuguese language literatures, and mostly the literatures of the two countries that count with a significant symbolic capital, namely Portugal and Brazil, faced an unparalleled opportunity to enter more and more into the global circulation of world literature and receive growing attention from international academia and the global reader public. Taking into account the recent „internationalization” and „globalization” of Portuguese and Brazilian literatures the course aims not only to present the most influential authors and tendencies from both side of the Atlantic, but also to analyse the dynamics between the Lusophone literatures and world literature. Knowledge: Knows the rules and the different registers of the oral and the written Portuguese language and can apply them effectively according to the linguistic context. Knows the cultural particularities of the Portuguese language countries, is familiar with the main artistic and cultural tendencies of the Lusophone world and it’s main authors, oeuvres and manifestations, including the elements of popular culture. Acquires a high level of autonomy regarding the main specific questions of the field as well as their background and interpretation. Skills: Able to use the Portuguese language in a fluent and appropriate way according to the linguistic context. Aims to develop the ability of a knowledge-based, critical thinking within the students. Open to new methodologies of self-development. Attitude: Strives to teach the student respectful attitudes towards the perspective and values of others. Considers important to continuously develop the knowledge and skills of students. Gives special importance to develop high tolerance regarding different nationalities and ethnicities
- Course content
- Departing from the theorization and the different interpretations of post-modernism the course explores the most paradigmatic authors and texts between the turn of the millenium and the present days. The epistemological break of the Carnations Revolution in Portugal lead the country and it’s literature to reevaluate and to reinterpret it’s own history and national identity. This kind of national post-modernism which brought into question the age-long narratives on cultural identity has been replaced by a different kind of post-modern literature that doesn’t seem to thematize anymore the problematics of national existence. The books of Gonçalo M. Tavares, José Luís Peixoto, João Tordo and Walter Hugo Mãe distance themselves ideologically and thematically from the questions of the nation and tend to acquire a more international perspective. In the first part of the semester the course will follow the change of dynamics in the Portuguese literary field and the emergence of a new possible canon of post-modernism throught the works of the above-mentioned authors of the so-called „geração do milénio”. The second part of the course provides an insight into the contemporary literary scene in Brazil through the works of Rubem Fonseca, Milton Hatoum, Luiz Ruffato, Paulo Lins and Fernando Bonassi and offers a mapping of the Brazilian society and it’s deep problematics via the interpretation of several literary texts by the mentioned writers.
