- The aim of the course is to trace the process of formation and evolution of Portuguese Romanticism and to study to discouse of Portuguese Realism. Knowledge: Has a language knowledge of at least C1 level. Knows the particularities of the Portuguese Romanticism and Realism Knows the main authors and texts from the canon of Portuguese Romanticism and Realism Skills: Able to find, read, review and analyze theoretical sources regarding a the research area of XIX century Portuguese culture and Portuguese Romanticism and Realism Able to read and to interpret literary texts from the XIX century Able to recognize the similarities and the differences between European Romanticism/Realism and Portuguese Romanticism/Realism Attitude: Considers important the cultural and the literary heritage of the XIX century Recognizes how and why certain social and cultural discourses of the Romantic and Realist era define contemporary thinking. Strives to read literary texts from the XIX century
- Course content
- Starting from the historical and social context of the 19th century (Napoleonic invasion, the move of the royal court to Rio de Janeiro, the Civil War, the establishment of the liberal monarchy, the rise of the bourgeoisie), the course will first study the characteristics and the main works of Portuguese Romanticism and then Realism. From the first generation of Romantics (Almeida Garrett, Alexandre Herculano) and their main genres, such as the historical novel (Eurico, o presbítero) and the national tragedy (Frei Luís de Souza), we move on to the second, so-called ultra-Romantic generation (Camilo Castelo Branco, Soares dos Passos), to arrive to the Questão de Coimbra, the most important literary debate of the XIXth century that marked the emergence of a new generation in the history of Portuguese Romanticism, which, with its political orientation, anticipated the development of Realism in the work of Eça de Queirós. In the light of this, the first half of the semester will be dedicated to the paradigmatic authors and texts of the three generations of Romanticism, while the second half will be spent studying the great master of Portuguese Realism, Eça de Queirós.
