- Purpose of teaching: to learn Sociolinguistic studies in Brazilian Portuguese. Skills: · Students shall be able to use concepts on Sociolinguistics, so that they can describe different variable linguistic phenomena in Brazilian Portuguese. · Students shall be able to discuss Linguistic variation (historical, geographic, social, and situational) in Portuguese language according to the Sociolinguistics framework, including linguistic change. · They shall be able to follow and understand the class delivered in the target language. Attitudes: ·Students are interested in Sociolinguistics of Portuguese language, especially Brazilian Portuguese, but also in other Portuguese varieties such as the European Portuguese and Portuguese-speaking countries in Africa. · They shall seek to improve their general knowledge of the key concepts of Sociolinguistics in Portuguese. · They shall be open to new knowledge of language phenomena. Autonomy and responsability: · Students shall take an active part in the course, preparing their home assignments in time. · They shall ask the teacher the questions that arise during their studies and integrate the answers into their knowledge. · They take responsibility for their achievements and failures.
- Course content
- Content of instruction: This course aims at providing linguistic knowledge that enables a reflection about the dynamic nature of the language and the speakers’ uses of it within the society. In the first part of the course, there is a discussion about the theoretical concepts on linguistic variation and norm. Next, it is made a presentation of the Sociolinguistic theory. In the last part of the course, a range of variable linguistic phenomena of Portuguese language, especially the Brazilian Portuguese variety, will be presented.
