- The aim of the course is to give an introduction into the particular world of Brazilian and Portuguese visual culture and to familiarize the students with the most relevant works and authors. According to the four part canon theory of Laurhauss the identiy of the Lusophone countries should be analyzed as a highly heterogenous field of facts, sounds, texts and images. The course focuses principally on the images produced in Portugal and in Brazil in the past centuries and on their relation to the national literary imagery. - Course content
- Departing from the first colonial representations of Brazil the course follows how the very image of the nation was shaped throughout the centuries in maps, paintings, photographs and movies inspired by literary and non-literary texts. The semester is divided into two parts: the first part is dedicated to Brazil, while the second to Portugal We discuss Eckhout’s, Frans Post’s, Moritzs Rugendas’, and Jean-Baptiste Debret’s paintings from the colonial and post-colonial era and then move on with the glorious imagery created by the Empire and it’s deconstruction in the modernist canon to finalize with an interpretation of Hélio Oiticica’s Tropicália. In the second part of the semester we start discussing José Malhoa’s famous painting on the fado-singers with the help of Anter de Quental’s and Oliveira de Martins’ reflections and then move on with the role of visual arts in the logic of Portuguese Modernismo to finally analyze Paula Rego’s paintings and it’s relations to the Portuguese literary tradition of the XIXth century.
