- Learning outcomes
- This course is a series of lectures focusing on Scandinavian cultural history. The attendance of the student at the lectures is not mandatory but highly recommended. The topics presented will vary from week to week, alternating between Swedish, Norwegian and Danish. The lectures will be held in these three languages. In order to pass the exam you shall do two things: Hand in a written paper in one of the three languages (Danish, Swedish or Norwegian). The paper should be academic, not an essay, and thus contain references as well as bring forth a precise and relevant analysis of one of the topics from the lectures. You are not allowed to freely interpret the topic to other cultures, the focus should stay on the Scandinavian cultures. Any use of AI, any plagiarism, any use of masked quotes will not be accepted or tolerated. We highly recommend that the students contact one of the three lecturers and seek advice on how the paper could or should look. B) Take an oral exam. Notes are allowed, but the student must show that he/she masters the chosen theme and is capable of presenting the central aspects of the theme, as they have been presented in the lecture and appear in the relevant literature. For the oral test the literature will be equivalent to approximately 30 pages per topic.
- Course content
- Analyze the role of Danish, Norwegian and Swedish art, education, linguistic and cultural identity in Scandinavian multicultural societies, the situation of migrants and their socio-cultural characteristics, addressing the types and possibilities of cultural mediation in Skandia. During the seminars, students practice the use of the knowledge acquired during lectures in problem recognition and solution by discussing various current cultural issues.
- Assessment method
- The student will get a grade both from the academic paper and the oral exam. Points are awarded based on performance where 90 - 100 is grade 5, 80 - 90 is grade 4, 70 - 80 is grade 3, 60 - 70 is grade 2 and 0 - 60 is grade 1. The final grade will be made up of the average of the two grades received.
