- Course description: A subject that reviews the two main eras and stylistic trends of the 19th century in the history of Slavic-language literature. The presentation presents the general characteristics, temporal location and periodization, poetics, characteristic genres and discourses of romanticism and realism in world and Slavic literature, points out the comparative relationships, influences, similarities and differences, and gives an introduction on the example of an outstanding creator/creation adds to the general and specific tasks and possibilities of analysis and interpretation. At the seminars, the students get to know the works of the most important authors of Slavic romanticism and realism, in the form of jointly processed readings, which are analyzed in detail in the seminar session and in the form of homework (reports) under the guidance of the best expert in the given language/literature.
- Course content
- The course is practical in nature, reviewing the development of Ukrainian literature from Realism to Modernism through the collective analysis of primary sources. Throughout the semester, students will become familiar with Ivan Franko’s realistic short stories, with a particular focus on social issues and the critique of education through works such as Hryts's Schooling or The Pig's Constitution. A central element of the curriculum is the work of Mykhailo Kotsiubynsky, where we examine the characteristics of psychological Impressionism through the motif of the "gift" in the novella A Birthday Present, as well as the depiction of mass psychosis in Fata Morgana. Special attention is paid to the relationship between literature and film, analyzing the text of Shadows of Forgotten Ancestors and Sergei Parajanov's visual symbolism. In the field of drama, we explore the conflict between nature and the human world, as well as the Neo-romantic world-view, through Lesya Ukrainka’s fairy play The Forest Song (Lisova pisnya). Finally, we analyze the works of Olha Kobylianska (e.g., Valse Mélancolique, The Aristocratic Woman), focusing on early feminist aspirations, intellectual female destinies, and the challenges of the modern artist's role.
