- A) Knowledge The student possesses in-depth knowledge of the major movements of Ukrainian Modernism, the Avant-garde, and 20th-century literary processes (Symbolism, Impressionism, Futurism, Neoclassicism). They understand the aesthetic and political background of the "Executed Renaissance" (Rozstrilyane vidrodzhennya) and the "Sixtiers" (shistdesyatnyky), which they identify through specific texts during the seminar work. B) Skills By the end of the seminar, the student is able to: Conduct independent critical analysis and group interpretation of complex literary texts (e.g., works by Khvylovy, Kulish, Zerov). Practically identify poetic devices and stylistic features within primary sources. Present argumentative interdisciplinary parallels between literary works and related arts (e.g., Boychukism in painting, Kurbas’s theater). Perform a comparative analysis of literary representations of totalitarian systems and forms of artistic resistance. C) Attitude The student is open to collaborative text interpretation and academic debate. They are sensitive to the literary depiction of national identity and political oppression and are committed to the critical examination of modern aesthetic values. D) Autonomy and Responsibility The student takes responsibility for preparing for seminar sessions (reading assignments) and is capable of forming a professionally grounded independent opinion and defending it during group discussions.
- Course content
- The course processes the development of Ukrainian literature as a practical seminar, focusing on the collective analysis of primary sources: Early Modernism and Impressionism: Practical analysis of Mykhailo Kotsiubynsky and psychological prose (techniques for depicting the "inner world"). Avant-garde Experiments of the 1920s: Formal analysis of Mykhaylo Semenko’s Futurist poetry and interpretation of Neoclassicist texts (Zerov, Rylsky) in the light of cultural continuity. The Tragedy of the "Executed Renaissance": Detailed textual analysis of Mykola Kulish’s satires and Mykola Khvylovy’s Expressionist novellas (the conflict between revolutionary fanaticism and individual morality). Socialist Realism and Political Oppression: A critical examination of representative works of the era, identifying the aesthetic requirements of total dictatorship. The Emergence of the Sixtiers (shistdesyatnyky): Analyzing the works of Vasyl Symonenko and his contemporaries from the perspective of returning to human values and national self-awareness. Literature and Film: Comparing cinematic adaptations (e.g., by Sergei Parajanov) with original literary sources (seminar screening and discussion).
