Psychology Course - Weekly Curriculum Understanding Psychological Processes and Human Behaviour Course Overview This comprehensive psychology course develops an understanding of psychological processes and human behaviour while emphasising psychological perspectives on human diversity and social inclusion. Students will explore how culture influences psychological functioning across various dimensions, including individualism versus collectivism, religious affiliation, and ethnic membership. The psychology course develops understanding of psychological processes and human behaviour. Besides the main paradigms in psychology, we consider an essential part of our course psychological perspectives on human diversity and social inclusion Culture is also a crucial factor in our quest to understand human beings better, enabling us to examine psychological functioning through the lens of culture (for example, individualism versus collectivism, religious affiliation, ethnic membership, and so on). Upon completion, students should be able to demonstrate a basic knowledge of the science of psychology. Week 2: Introduction to Psychology & Science Topic: Foundations of Psychology as a Science Learning Objectives: Define psychology and its scientific nature Understand the scientific method in psychological research Identify major historical perspectives in psychology Content: What is psychology? Definition and scope Psychology as an empirical science Historical roots: from philosophy to science Wilhelm Wundt and the first psychology laboratory Early schools of thought: Structuralism and Functionalism Contemporary approaches to psychology Key Concepts: Scientific method, empiricism, hypothesis, variables, objectivity Week 3: Foundations of Psychoanalytic Theory Topic: Freud's Revolutionary Approach to the Mind Learning Objectives: Understand Freud's psychoanalytic theory and historical context Explain the topographical model of the mind Analyze the role of the unconscious in daily life Content: Sigmund Freud's life, context, and intellectual influences The discovery of the unconscious mind Topographical model: Conscious, Preconscious, Unconscious The interpretation of dreams as "royal road to the unconscious" Parapraxes (Freudian slips) and their significance Free association technique and its applications Cultural and historical critiques of early psychoanalysis
