- The course introduces the main concepts and topics of international political economy (IPE). We discuss the leading theories of international relations, the main international organizations and their roles in the world economy, and the evolution of the world trade regime under the GATT and the WTO. We also deal with the global tendencies and the consequences of foriegn direct investments, and the rise of the leading regional integrations in the world. We close the course with exploring the changing framework of globalization in the present and the nuanced dynamics of international relations – with all of their economic aspects – between the largest power centers of the world (USA, EU, China). The goal is to equip students with the knowledge needed to understand the conditions of succesful integration of national economies into the global economy and to interpret the dynamics of power relations on the global landscape. Throughout the course, we pay special attention to the empirical evidence related to the particular theoretical issues. Intended learning outcomes: On successful completion of this course, students should be able to: understand and critically analyse the basic mechanisms and tendencies of international economic and political relations. solve policy issues related to the enhancement of international integration, international trade, competitiveness and FDI investments, and to the improwement of international relations. explain and evaluate the operation of the largest international organizations and the policies of the USA, China and the EU at the global level. - Part 1: Basic theories and concepts of IPE Introduction into the definition and the basic concepts of IPE The main theories of IPE: Mercantilism, Physiocratism, Classic and Neoclassical Liberalism, Marxism and Neomarxism, Keynesianizmus, Neoliberalism, Neomercantilism, Economic patriotism Globalizastion: definitions, main institutions, powerty and income inequality in the globe, international tax competition Part 2: International intitutions and economic relations The system of world trade: history and leading principles, institutions (GATT / WTO), criticisms in the present The World Bank Group: history, management & operation, international aids and development lending Foreign direct investments (definition and indicators, benefits and costs to the host economy, regional tendencies) & international competitiveness (definition and indicators) Regional integrations (the levels of integration, the leading examples in the world) Part 3: Global megatrends New approaches to globalization: hegemonic stability, regime-theories, post-hegemonic theories, deglobalization, blocks vs. connectivity in international relations Ray Dalio and the hegemon cycles, the six megatrends The USA, China, and the EU in international politics and economy
