Learning outcomes
This English language elective course is meant to acquaint law students with the main insights of Economics as concerns the theory and selected empirical insights with regards to discrimination. Upon successfully completing the course, students will: better understand the economic drives behind patterns of discrimination give proper consideration to intended as well as unintended consequences of policies meant to curb or eliminate discrimination The prerequisites are: an introductory level understanding of Economics as such (e.g. having taken the obligatory first year Economics course at ELETE ÁJK Law), good enough English skills to read, write and discuss in English and an open mind.
Course content
Introduction: the course / the methods of Economics / Price theory Welfare measurement in Economics and its limitations Sources of differences in the price of the same goods and services (“price discrimination” under competition and the price discriminating monopolist Patterns of labour market differences across gender and ethnicity Economic models of labor market discrimination I Economic models of labor market discrimination II Methods of measuring discrimination in the labour market Welfare transfers and discrimination Economic models concerning Segregation in Education Methods of measuring segregation in education Summary
Assessment method
The class grade will be based on two kinds of inputs: class participation (obligatory), including score obtained for in-class quizzes (Kahoot) covering notes from the previous class and required readings  and optional short student presentations held A ten-page essay to be handed in by the end of the class period on a topic within the field discussed in class
