Title INTRODUCTION TO AMERICAN CONSTITUTIONAL LAW, CRIMINAL LAW AND CRIMINAL PROCEDURE Lecturer: Jeffery P. Gray, Attorney at Law (Illinois, USA) JEFFGRAYLAW@GMAIL.COM Brief description The purpose of this course is to introduce students to the basic concepts of the United States Constitution, the function of the courts in the United States and the fundamental concepts of criminal law and procedure and due process in American courts. Schedule 1. Overview of the American Legal System and Constitutional Law 2. The Constitution and its applicability to criminal law 3. Overview of Criminal Law 4. American courts and jurisdiction 5. Mental state, defenses to criminal acts, insanity, necessity, entrapment 6. Murder, manslaughter/2nd degree murder, involuntary manslaughter 7. Felony murder rule, accountability for the criminal conduct of another 8. Search and seizure and the exclusionary rule 9. Procedural rights 4th, 5th and 6th amendments to the constitution - the right to privacy, the right to an attorney, the right to a speedy and public trial, compulsory process, the right to confront witnesses. 10. You be the Judge and Jury- The class will get to decide how the court should rule in actual court cases. Materials/Recommended readings United States Constitution No textbook will be used for this class Assessment/Exam The final exam will be a group exercise involving topics covered during class
