- The course aims at surveying American literature from the beginnings to the start of the 21st century.
- Course content
- The course provides a survey of American literature from Colonial times until the present day. Main periods and topics touched upon include in chronological order: Puritanism and the Colonial Period; 18th century Enlightenment, religious revival and the literature of the Revolution; the American Renaissance, its philosophy, prose and poetry; late 19th century realism, regionalism and psychological realism; Native American literatures; abolitionism and African-American literature in the 19th century; women writers of the 19th century, the beginnings of feminist thought; Modernism in prose and poetry, the Harlem Renaissance and the development of African-American literature; 20th century women writers; Postmondernism in prose and poetry; popular culture and literature; 20th century American drama; ethnic identities in literature.

- Written exam during the exam period.
