- Description
- Learning outcomes
- The aim of this course is to introduce participants to the principles and techniques of classroom observation, with special reference to English language teaching.
- Course content
- The focus is on observation as an integral and essential part of reflective professional development. Participants will be encouraged to reflect systematically on their own activities as learners and teachers. Much of the in-class work will involve watching and discussing videoed lessons, but participants will also be expected to organise and carry out individual observations of their own and/or other teachers’ professional practice. Participants will (i) observe a variety of teachers and classes at different levels; (ii) become aware of the difference between observation, interpretation and comment, and of the basic principles of systematic classroom observation; (iii) become more aware of their own principles and priorities with respect to language teaching, and of the effects that these have on their observations; (iv) practise writing formal observation reports, (v) use and discuss a variety of focussed observation methods (vi) conduct an individual focussed observation project and delivered a formal presentation of it, to be regarded as a term paper.
- Assessment method
- A course grade will be given at the end of the semester, based on the following: (i) Participation/Contribution during seminars; (ii) Written observation reports; Project presentation.
