Usual semester

Learning outcomes
The course is aimed at introducing methods of contemporary poems in the EFL classroom in workshop fashion, on the other hand, special emphasis is given to discussing more general literary and cultural issues, such as the role of poetry in everyday life and the interaction between popular and elite cultures. Independent research is also encouraged to show students how to complement and refresh their approaches to teaching in the future.
Course content
The course offers contemporary poems for discussion, focusing on the close reading of texts as well as considering broader issues, e.g. the social and cultural contexts related to the poems. The methodological benefits of using poems in EFL classes will be taken into consideration with special emphasis. The discussion of poems by well-known and canonical contemporary authors (e.g. Seamus Heaney, Ted Hughes, Tony Harrison, Carol Ann Duffy, Ben Okri, Paul Muldoon, etc.) will be complemented by reading poems by lesser known poets and by writers of song lyrics, and watching youtube videos of poems or discussing other adaptational forms. Crossover genres, especially slam poetry/the spoken word will be given special attention.
Assessment method
Reading of set texts, active participation in class discussion, short presentations/home assignments, a final home essay/description of how to use a specific poem in class (4-6 pp). As the course will often explore uncharted fields, participation in class discussion is indispensible, and students are strongly encouraged to share their ideas and contribute to the debates in class.
