- Knowledge: The aim of the course is to contribute significantly to the development of students’ intelligent, sensitive, and analytical English reading habits through the acquisition of knowledge about a series of 20th-century short narratives. Skills and attitudes: The thematic grouping of the readings alone cannot provide a comprehensive picture of modern English-language short prose as a whole, but recognizing the criteria for selection is meant to spark students’ interest in the major trends in the formation of this most accessible genre; student-presentations are designed to help them develop their presentation skills. Autonomy and responsibility: Students are expected to comply with the rules governing the completion of written assignments (e.g., use and documentation of MI and other online and printed sources), participate in class group work, and manage or lead such co-operation as called upon by the instructor.
- Course content
- Selected short stories from the turn of the century and the first seven decades of the twentieth century assigned by the instructor; background information, knowledge and skills (terminology, history, culture, etc.) required for a meaningful discussion of the primary texts assisted by student presentations and secondary sources.
- Assessment method
- Practical course mark on the basis of continuous assessment (active in-class participation and two in-class tests) and a presentation made by each student.
