- Learning outcomes
- The course intends to give a broad overview of cultural and social phenomena related to the modern English-speaking world. The topics will be discussed with the aim of shedding light on the intellectual history of the 20th century through the lens of literary studies and its relationship both to the sister arts (music and the visual arts), and to the natural as well as the social sciences and social philosophy. Students will be able to place developments of the modern humanities, with the Anglophone (mostly British) culture and literature in its centre, in an intermedial and interdisciplinary context.
- Course content
- A question we will ask (and, hopefully, at least partially answer), is whether literature, art and the humanities in general reflect our social reality. Issues of the “science and culture” wars, modernism, post-modernism and contemporary culture will be discussed alongside with problems of narratology, fictionality, intermediality, and political ideologies, including utopianism.
- Assessment method
- Two in-class tests (essay and quiz) as the basis of a ‘recommended mark’ which can be replaced with a mark earned in an oral exam according to individual requests.
