- Learning outcomes
- The aim of this course is to introduce students to the basic trends in English and American modernism. The course equips students with the basic skills of literary interpretation and some key terms and terrains of literary study. It explores assumptions underlying interpretive methods and approaches to literary texts. It also seeks to enable students to master the basics of critical thinking and writing and to provide guidance in philological work.
- Course content
- The seminars are devoted to the open discussion of literary texts that the students have to read and prepare in advance. We debate various possible interpretations in the course of which we focus on what makes one interpretation more plausible than an other. At the same time, we are also devoted to studying writing techniques, through the discussion of essays that students write on assigned texts.
- Assessment method
- Assessment is based on attendance and participation in class discussions, the development students demonstrate in their written work, and an end-term essay that is to be written in class, on a pre-assigned text.
