Learning outcomes
By providing an insight into music, students are introduced to the history, society and culture of 16th -18th-century England.
Course content
The course will explore some important chapters of English music between the 16th and 18th centuries, with special emphasis on vocal music and the choral tradition. The impact of the reformation, music in Shakespeare's plays, musical life under the Stuarts, the rise of the Italian opera and its implications as well as Handel's oratorios will be examined in their cultural contexts.
Assessment method
In-class tests (based on the material of the classes). Evaluation: contribution to discussions, (presentation when applicable) and tests.
