Elective Specialisation: Better/simpler languages? Can they be compared? A look at grammatical systems

Language
Learning outcomes
No two languages “do things” – that is, connect meaning to form – in the same way. Language A may be more effective in certain respects, while language B in some others. May that be true? How could that be measured, if at all? One issue, then, is effectiveness of languages (whatever that may be).
Course content
What is interesting for us in this course, however, is not the issue of effectiveness, but the incredible variety with which languages “do things” in several areas, primarily morphology and syntax.
Assessment method
Assessment is based on two tests (of equal weight, one mid-term, one end-term). Both tests needed for a valid mark, which is the average of tests.
Bibliography
The sources (five book chapters) will be consulted. Literature will be available from Teams.
