Learning outcomes

The course aims to become acquinted with the basic concepts of Hungarian orthography and to systematize their interrelations. To present the main investigations and the theoretical background of orthography as an applied linguistic issue, to comprehend the nature of spelling codification and the spelling system, to acquire an ability of practical application and use. a) knowledge The student knows the basics of applied linguistics, and the scientific methods for linguistic analysis. The student knows recent handbooks, online journals and databases which are usable both for teaching and learning orthography. The student knows the variety of methods and techniques for processing paper-based and online texts of different genres, and she is able to identify and correct spelling errors in texts. The student is able to subtly comprehend the phenomena of language use, including the corpora of orthography. The student knows the diversity of knowledge about language, the variability of language, and is able to interpret this knowledge in a manner that is appropriate for the pupils’ age group. b) skills The student is able to express oneself in a professional manner both in speech and writing. The student is able to adaptively and creatively apply her competences in the special subject and the subject method in the course of first language education. The student is able to model the knowledge of spelling, and is able to interpret this knowledge in a manner that is appropriate for the pupils’ age group. The student has subject-based and pedagogical knowledge and skills to support individual and community-specific first language learning, spoken and written language development. The student seeks to improve her own written communication and to learn the special characteristics of written communication inside and outside the classroom. c) attitudes The student seeks to transfer the fundamental values of national culture. The student attaches importance to the constant improvement of pupils’ skills and knowledge in text comprehension and text creation. The student strives for self-education, for supporting the improvement of written communication. The student strives for self-education in written communication, supports the improvement of pupils’ writing. d) autonomy and responsibility The student seeks to transfer the fundamental values of national culture. The student is keen to constantly develop the pupils’ knowledge and skills on orthography.

Course content

Topics: Language planning: status and corpora. Domains of Hungarian orthography: rules, school orthography, manual, jargon orthographies. The spelling norm. Phonemic principle, reflecting sense, tradition. Ways of writing: pronunciation, word analysis, tradition, simplification. Written forms of vowels and consonants. Spelling of simple words and compounds. Initial letters. Proper names. Separation. Writing of foreign words. Abbreviations, signs, acronyms. Punctuation. Spelling numbers. Related topics in the National Core Curriculum in 5–8th grades: Spelling, linguistic correctness; Utilization of book and library, Locations of culture. Related learning outcomes in the National Core Curriculum in 5–8th grades: related outcomes for the confident use of spelling: knows the fundamental characteristics of the Hungarian sound system along with the rules of the linkage of sounds, and their written marking; relying on their function, recognizes and names morphemes and word classes; relying on their function, identifies fundamental and frequent phrases (nominal, adverbial, attributive, objective) in texts; distinguish simple and complex sentences according to their structure; Essential outcomes: applies the learnt linguistic, grammatical, orthographical knowledge and the knowledge acquired about the standard usage of language, knows and applies the basic principles of spelling: pronunciation, word analysis, tradition, simplification; recognises and corrects common spelling mistakes differ from the learned forms in her own work and in the work of her mates. Related learning outcomes in the National Core Curriculum in 9–12th grades: the pupil knows her first language along with its structural organization, her language use is conscious and proper, the pupil knows the phonetics, morphology, word classes, and syntax of Hungarian; applies the learnt linguistic, grammatical, orthographical knowledge
