- Learning outcomes
- The course focuses primarily on scientific content-based language competence development. Students develop their four core language competencies: listening comprehension, oral expression, reading comprehension, and written expression based on phonetic topics and contrastive exercises. They practice the use of linguistic vocabulary and improve their terminology knowledge. The goals of the seminar are to improve the student’s pronunciation, spelling competences, their language awareness of German phonetics and linguistic interferences and to familiarize them with the phonetic transcription system IPA. Knowledge: The students know the rules of the German language. They have knowledge about the varieties of German. They know the spelling rules, the terminology and theories of phonetics and phonology and their present-day fields of research. Skills: The students are able to communicate correctly and efficiently in German. They are able and willing to transmit and apply their knowledge. They are able to employ basic research methods, to solve professional questions and to develop themselves autonomously. Attitude: The students aim to continuously develop their linguistic, grammatical, phonetic and orthographical knowledge. They are open to the reception and procession of new linguistic phenomena and research results. Autonomy, responsibility: The students apply their practical and theoretical knowledge in phonetics in their autonomous learning and self-awareness. The students take responsibility for their individual and collective professional development and aim at establishing their professional awareness.
- Course content
- During the course, students acquire basic knowledge of phonetics and phonology. Comparison between German and Hungarian, and between different German varieties is also an important aspect of the seminar. Seminar topics are: German Intonation, Vowel and Consonant Sounds, IPA (International Phonetic Alphabet), Orthography. The course includes elements both of knowledge and practical skills.
