- Aim of the course: The primary aim of the course is to familiarise students with the international role of German, from the beginnings of literacy to the present-day German language. Students will acquire knowledge that will provide them with valuable didactic tools for the presentation and communication of linguistic phenomena. The course places a strong emphasis on the presentation of German language and cultural interactions, which will also help students to gain a better understanding of the Hungarian language and culture, among others. The multimedia nature of the course will facilitate the students' assimilation of the knowledge to be acquired. Knowledge: the participants will learn about the role and influence of German outside the closed German language area, the consequences of this phenomenon and the reasons for the pluricentricity of German. They will gain knowledge about the nature and types of linguistic contact (substrate, superstrate, adstrate) and the development of intercultural relations. Skills: students will be able to recognise the regularities of language interactions, to apply them in practice, to analyse interculturality and acculturation. Attitude: Students will be able to understand the nature and origins of language interactions (as far as they are known to science), and the interaction between languages. Autonomy and responsibility: with the knowledge acquired, students will be able to carry out independent research, to communicate responsibly the nature of linguistic and cultural interactions, and to dispel linguistic misconceptions. In the transmission and dissemination of knowledge, students will follow the National Curriculum.
- Course content
- The course examines the impact of German on the world outside the closed German language area in a synchronic and diachronic approach, focusing on aspects such as the influence of German on other languages and cultures before and after the emergence of the literary language (Romance Latin, Scandinavian, Slavic languages, Hungarian), the overseas German language islands and their importance (America, Africa, Australia), German as a language of science in the 19th century and the role of German in the European Union, the language policies of the divided Germany. The new forms of communication (texting, chat, etc.) and their influence on the German language will also be discussed.
