Learning outcomes
The aim of the course is to introduce the basic concepts and methods of statistics, their application in various areas of biology, and to acquire practical knowledge related to the use of methods in addition to understanding the theoretical foundations.
Course content
Types of scales. Normal distribution. Central tendency and descriptors of deviation from it. Population and sample. Graphical representation of data. Estimates. Confidence intervals. Hypothesis testing. Association testing: correlation. Testing of independence: Chi-square test. Comparing the means of two samples: two-sample t-test. Comparing the means of several samples: analysis of variance. Linear regression. During the practice, students convert the acquired theoretical knowledge into practical knowledge by analyzing data sets given by the course instructor. A freely available, graphically accessible statistical software package is used to perform statistical tests.
Assessment method
practical mark (5) (1 failed, 5 excellent) Participation in the weekly courses is mandatory for completing the subject. The evaluation is based on the students' performance during the semester: grades received for practical assignments and the end-of-semester test.
