- Learning outcomes
- The aim of the course is to introduce the most important chemical processes occurring in the atmosphere and the biogeochemical cycles, as well as the causes of the formation and depletion of the ozone layer. a) Knowledge: Understands the composition of the air, the sources and sinks of atmospheric pollutants, the NOx-ROx cycle, the Chapman mechanism, the process of stratospheric ozone depletion, and the biogeochemical cycles. b) Skill: - c) Attitude: Approaches the relationship between nature and humans from an "Anthropocene" perspective; recognizes the planet-shaping role of living nature (Gaia theory). d) Autonomy: Approaches environmental issues determined by complex chemical processes by studying the entire environmental system; recognizes the limitations of science and the unresolved conflicts in the protection of air quality and climate.
- Course content
- The history of atmospheric chemistry. The composition of air, the structure of the atmosphere. Sources and sinks of trace gases, residence time. Atmospheric photochemistry, NOx-ROx cycle. The formation and breakdown of stratospheric ozone. The biogeochemical cycle of nitrogen, sulfur, and carbon.
