Learning outcomes
The main goal is to deepen the knowledge of probability and mathematical statistics in preparation for conducting climatological studies. Competencies: Knowledge: Mathematical basics acquired during BSc studies (set theory, differentiation, integration, metric spaces, vector algebra, probability distributions). Ability: The students are able to interpret the realizations of meteorological phenomena as stochastic processes. Attitude: The students deepen their theoretical knowledge in the field of statistical climatology. Autonomy and Responsibility: The subject provides an opportunity for students to interpret meteorological phenomena on a probabilistic and mathematical statistical basis, pointing out possible misunderstandings.
Course content
An overview of the basic concepts of probability and mathematical statistics. Modeling of probabilistic phenomena: review of probability distributions which are significant in the field of meteorology, methods of parametric estimation, verification of the fitted model with hypothesis testing procedures. Introduction into the theory of stochastic processes. Linear trend fitting.
Assessment method
Oral exam (5 levels) – Solution of practical examples during the semester count towards the oral exam
