Learning outcomes
The aim of this course is to present the environmental and climate changes during the Quaternary, the methods of investigations, especially the methods of the absolute and relative age determination. Competencies: Knowledge: Familiar with current theories and models of geography based on scientific evidence, and aware of the possible directions and limits of the field. Konowledge of the general and specific characteristics of geography, its internal laws, its boundaries, its most important developments and its links with related disciplines. Knowledge of the processes, systems and scientific problems of geography which can be studied, with a broad knowledge of the literature. Knows the typical processes of the Quaternary and the causes of climate change. Knowledge of the relative and absolute dating methods used in Quaternary research, their advantages and limitations. Knowledge of Pleistocene processes in the Carpathian Basin. Knowledge of the most important issues of loess stratigraphy and chronostratigraphy in Hungary. Ability: Ability to analyse in detail the various concepts that make up the knowledge system of geography, to synthesise and evaluate the broad and specific contexts, and to critically evaluate geographic theories and principles in the light of the changing natural and social environment. Ability to produce independent, scientific summaries and analyses on specific topics of geography. Ability to critically interpret information from different sub-disciplines. Ability to organise and compare the knowledge acquired. Attitude: Assumes the overarching and specific relationships, the professional identity, which constitute the specific character of its field, its personal and community role. Seeks to understand and synthesise as widely as possible the processes taking place in geographical spheres. Endeavours to carry out the tasks in relation to geographical problems in cooperation with colleagues and taking account of their professional opinions. Communicates in a credible manner the summary and detailed issues of the profession, and the actions are guided and shaped by the commitment to sustainable development. Takes the initiative in the work and put the results of the profession at the service of the community. Has a well-developed professional identity and a sense of vocation. Strives to continuously develop his/her knowledge in the field of geography. Autonomy and Responsibility: Has a high degree of autonomy and responsibility in creating and modelling theoretical and practical contexts requiring comprehensive and specialised geographical skills. Performs senior researcher duties in geography-related scientific research and applies the results in workplaces, research and development institutes and administrations. Able to express his/her professional opinion independently in decision-making situations and take responsibility for their environmental and social impact. Independently applies a wide range of methods and techniques in practice in contexts of varying complexity and predictability.
