This course will explore Europe’s regional geography, mainly its human and economic geography. Students will be exposed to the internal and external forces that bind the continent’s various parts together and the social geographic factors that pull them apart. Special emphasis will be placed on contemporary Europe in the era of regional development and the European Union.
Learning outcomes
This course is an introduction to how the discipline of geography makes sense of our continent, its different people, places, and regions.
Course content
This course will explore Europe’s regional geography, mainly its human and economic geography. Students will be exposed to the internal and external forces that bind the continent’s various parts together and the social geographic factors that pull them apart. Special emphasis will be placed on contemporary Europe in the era of regional development and the European Union. Thematics: 1. Regional geography 2. Borders, subdivisions of Europe. Regions, macroregions in Europe 3. Regional development in EU 4. Spatial structure of Europe 5. Main social and economic characteristics of Europe 6. Regional geography of Western Europe 7. Regional geography of Western part of Central Europe 8. Regional geography of Northern Europe 9. Regional geography of Southern Europe 10. Regional geography of Eastern part of Central Europe (post socialist countries)
Assessment method
The course is completed by the written exam (test) where student proves his knowledge about Europe.
