- Introducing characteristic features and main types of literary kinds and genres; demonstrating the use of methods, concepts and terminology of literary studies in English, using important literary works as examples.
- Course content
- Each lecture will highlight critical tools, approaches, strategies via demonstrating the analysis of a work or a literary problem. 1 Literary Research. Tools of the Trade. 2 Literature and Literary Studies As a Discipline. 3 The Language of Literature. Figures of Speech. 4 Poetry. Sound Patterning. 5 Poetry. Genres. 6 Drama As a Multimedia Form of Art. 7 Drama. The Changing Historical Context of Theatre. 8 Narrative Fiction. Story, Plot, Narrative Voice. 9 Narrative Fiction. Genres and History of the Form. 10 Period Study. Literary History. Cultural Memory. Literatures in English. Postcolonial Studies. 11 Literary Theory. Gender, Culture and Adaptation Studies. - Assessment method
- The course will be followed by a written examination. The exam will test students’ knowledge of technical terms and analytical methods as well as their ability to analyse a piece of text they may never have seen before.
