- The course aims to help students in producing electronic manuscripts. Students participating in this course will (i) be able to produce electronic manuscripts that typographers can happily work with, (ii) have some acquaintance with typographical notions (which will make her communication with a typographer more effective), and (iii) be able to engage in typographical projects.
- Course content
- Partitioning texts: paragraphs, sections, chapters, parts, notes, abstract, keywords, parts of a book, types of electronic text: encoding, WYSIWYG vs. markup, breaking text: breaking words/lines, hyphenation, fonts, font styles, font parameters, typographical units, kerning, tracking, space factors, font selection, typeface roles, a brief history of lettering and typography, famous typefaces, famous type designers, typeface identification and classification, diacritics, ligatures, tables, setting type on a pc 1: digital font formats, encoding systems, unicode, open type fonts, font management, markup, stylesheets, typesetting systems, camera-ready documents, pdf generation, onscreen typography: web typography, web fonts.
