- The one-semester long seminar offers a short insight into the theory and practice of literary translation with a focus on practice. After a short theoretical introduction on transfer operations and the basics of editorial work, the emphasis will be on the individual projects of students. Students will acquire complex translating and editing skills through the translation of a short excerpt, the analysis of other translations of the same, whole source text, editing the translation of their partner, and discussing all their output in class.
- Course content
- Translation of excerpts from classic literary texts, the comparative analysis of already published translations, and the basics of editing.
- Assessment method
- Grades will be based on the elements of the individual project (the translation of an excerpt from a literary work; a circa 15 minutes long in-class presentation focusing on the challenges of the translation as well the comparison of already existing translations of the entire source text; editing and evaluating the partner’s work) as well as participation in class discussions and the end-term in-class paper.
