Learning outcomes
The seminar offers an introduction to Hungarian culture for international students studying in Budapest. Reading, watching, and studying a variety of samples from Hungarian literature and film, students will get the opportunity to learn about some of the representative pieces of the Hungarian cultural canon in its Central European context and to make the first steps towards discovering the field for themselves. Connecting contemporary texts and films with their historical aspects and the primarily narrative genres of literature and film with other arts like music and photography, the course provides a brief, comprehensive outline of Hungarian culture in general and the in-depth discussion of numerous specific works. By the end of the semester, students will be acquainted with some of the essential concepts related to Hungarian culture and able to orient themselves in their further studies in the field according to their individual interests.
Course content
Poems, short stories, plays, novels, and films selected from the Hungarian canon and from current Hungarian trends of culture.
Assessment method
Grades will be based on short weekly quiz questions and an end-term in-class paper – both reflecting on the course’s compulsory reading –, active participation in in-class work and a presentation on each student’s individual project.
Bibliography
Literary texts and films by primarily 20th century and contemporary Hungarian writers and film directors, as listed in the course description of the actual semester.
