Oktatás célja
This is a survey course designed to introduce, in lecture format, the history of English literature between 1660 and 1895, highlighting the major periods, genres, oeuvres and individual works of the era.
Tantárgy tartalma
The Restoration: a new beginning, diversity of voices, political, aesthetic and poetic concerns, Augustan poetry, the concept of wit (Dryden, Rochester) Restoration theatre and its innovations (female actors, moveable stage), from the heroic tragedy to the comedy of manners (Wycherley, Sheridan) The long eighteenth century: The first half of the eighteenth century, Augustan age, Scriblerus Club, main genres and concerns (Pope, Swift), the rise of the novel, technical innovations, journals, changing readership (Defoe, Richardson) The second half of the eighteenth century, Sentimentalism, the Romantic era, tradition and experiment, aesthetic and poetic concerns (Gray, Burns, Blake, Wordsworth, Coleridge) The second generation of Romantic poets and the changing canon? (Byron, Shelley and Keats, Mary Shelley) The Victorian age: historical, intellectual and cultural background, the Victorian novel and its periods (Dickens, Thackeray, Brontë sisters, Hardy, Wilde), the Victorian poetry (Tennyson, E.B.Browning, R.Browning, D.G.Rossetti, Ch. Rossetti, Swinburne, Hopkins)
