- Oktatás célja
- This course concerns British literature from 1960 to the present day. The objective is to give a survey of the major trends and also to reveal the unique qualities of particular works. The lectures will primarily focus on individual authors; general issues will be highlighted through the analysis of their works.
- Tantárgy tartalma
- Classical contemporary: the problems of canonizing contemporaries. Postmodernism and post-postmodernism: cultural phenomena from the 1960s till the present in the light of poetry, drama and fiction. Social criticism and dystopia (Anthony Burgess, Tony Harrison etc.), magical realism and political consciousness (Salman Rushdie); the feminist point of view (Angela Carter and Amy Sackville); postcolonial literature and the boundaries of national literature (Tibor Fischer). The characteristics of contemporary poetry: creating new mythologies (Ted Hughes, Seamus Heaney), commitment and social responsibility in contemporary literature (Tony Harrison, Seamus Heaney, Carol Ann Duffy, in drama: Caryl Churchill). Contemporary drama and theatre: experimentation and innovation in form and subject matter (Tom Stoppard, Caryl Churchill, in-yer-face theatre). Women’s voice and perspective in poetry and drama (Carol Ann Duffy, Caryl Churchill).

- The course will be followed by a written exam (quiz and two essays), based on primary material and the lecture slides/handouts (available under the course material section of this website).
