- Folklore Seminar BBN-NEP-132 Aims and main topics of the seminar: familiarization with folklore handbooks, series, and encyclopedias, learning how to use them discussing basic concepts of folklore studies (folklore, folkloristics, folklorism, folklorization, neofolklorism, postfolklorism, heritage preservation; folklore community, folk poetry, variability, affinity, etc.) discussing the characteristics of folklore basics of academic writing (1. how to conduct research 2. where and how to find literature on folkloristic topics 3. how to write an academic paper, i.e., how to process the sources we have read) how to read and take notes at university? Reading academic articles with understanding, the basics of critical thinking and comparative analysis source criticism – how to find reliable sources?

- Topics Introduction – requirements and topics What is folklore, and what does folkloristics deal with? What are the main characteristics of folklore? What are folklorism, neofolklorism, postfolklorism, and heritage? What is folklorization? Authenticity and faklore from a critical perspective. How does folklore change? Structural analysis of a holiday (Santa Claus) What does a folklorist do and what does he or she not do? What questions are folklorists most concerned with? Where and how can we find literature on folkloristic topics? How do we compile an ethnographic bibliography? How do we write a seminar paper, what are the techniques for note-taking and referencing? How do we avoid plagiarism, what is the difference between paraphrasing and plagiarism? Summary

- Requirements for completing the course: Active class attendance (max. 3 absences) Completion of online and offline assignments related to the class, comprehension of readings Preparation of a 10-item thematic bibliography A summary of the research history of the assigned topic (5–8 pages in length) using the prepared bibliography. (See the seminar paper requirements for more details.) Assessment (module-related assignments – 40% – and seminar paper – 60%): 90–100: excellent 80–90: good 70–80: average 60–70: satisfactory –59 : unsatisfactory
