- Course aim To introduce undergraduate ethnography students to the theoretical foundations, methodology and sources of ethnographic research. The course follows the stages of empirical research and focuses on transferring knowledge related to specific theoretical and methodological challenges, based on the researchers' practical experiences.
- Course content
- Course content: An introduction to the theoretical foundations, methodology and sources of ethnographic research for university students of ethnography. Sources include bibliographies, dictionaries, encyclopaedias, series and periodicals, as well as archives containing objects, images, films and manuscripts. Fundamentals of source criticism. Research methods in ethnography, folklore studies and cultural anthropology, including fieldwork, observation, interviews and questionnaires, and data processing. The basics of ethnographic fieldwork. The semester is organised around the phases of empirical research and the transfer of knowledge, focusing on specific theoretical and methodological challenges based on the practical experiences of individual researchers. Main topics and issues: Introduction. - Research planning and types of sources Fieldwork methods. Conducting interviews and observations and keeping a field diary. Fieldwork methods: Questionnaires and collection guidelines. Fieldwork methods: Examining the physical environment: Images, photos and films as sources and documentation. Manuscript and archive sources, maps and statistics. Data processing. Handling fieldwork data, research ethics and source criticism. Researchers and research subjects Forms and formal requirements of ethnographic writing and genres. Researchers in the field
- Assessment method
- Assessment and evaluation system: practical mark. The basic principles of student assessment are set out in the Faculty of Humanities' regulations at ELTE, which state that, given the nature of the knowledge and skills imparted, lecturers shall select the means of assessing student work. The practical grade is usually based on the assessment of written and/or oral work, which students can obtain individually or as part of a group.
