- Learning outcomes
- Aim of the teaching: According to the JRC, the following developments in the student's knowledge and competencies are planned through the subject: a) knowledge - Knows and understands the operating mechanisms of social phenomena and their subsystems examined by ethnography and, within it, material culture research. - Knows the most important factors of social, structural, economic and political processes that determine the field of material culture within ethnography - Has confident methodological knowledge, understands and sees through the possibilities and perspectives of methodological innovation. - Knows all the most important elements of the social science concept set, understands the connections that form the basis of the scientific interpretation of society and social communication. b) skills - Able to navigate the deeper connections of his/her field of expertise and the specific social and ethnographic problems raised by practice, as well as their possible solutions. - Able to process new knowledge in his/her field of expertise effectively. Confidently handles printed and digital literature sources, archives and databases concerning the material culture of social science and ethnography, and the tools used to operate them. - In his/her professional use of vocabulary, he/she confidently uses the vocabulary of the profession, the basic scientific concepts of the profession, and the elements of the special vocabulary based on them. c) attitude - Open to the dynamic and value-based acceptance of social changes, receptive to adapting the principles of approach that combat prejudices. - Accepts that cultural phenomena are historically and socially determined and changeable. - Accepts and consistently undertakes the diversity of social science and ethnographic thinking, and authentically represents its principles of approach in its narrower and broader environment. - Stands out consciously and responsibly in all forms of cooperation for the consistent implementation and protection of the legal, ethical and professional standards of society, its narrower professional field and its workplace. d) autonomy and responsibility - In the professional environments of ethnography and material culture research, he takes an independent and proactive role in validating the social concept he has accepted. - In his own professional environment, he develops a historically and politically coherent individual position that helps the development and awareness of himself and his environment.
- Course content
- Course content: The course aims to provide students with a comprehensive overview of a significant area of research in traditional folk culture in the Carpathian Basin: lifestyle and living culture. During the semester, we explore the various approaches to space utilisation and furnishing in 19th- and 20th-century peasant homes and urban living spaces across different regions. We also delve into the cultural history of everyday and sacred objects, related crafts such as furniture making, pottery, textiles, and leatherworking, and their evolution over time. We will also touch on the living spaces of cube houses and housing estates, as well as phenomena related to the preservation of traditions and revitalisation in contemporary society. Main topics and issues: The concept of lifestyle, research into the topic The production of household items: from self-sufficiency to guild-made products to mass production. The life of objects Furniture making Traditional types of peasant furniture Pottery and metalworking. Types of clay and metal vessels Coopers, weavers, tailors, shoemakers, bootmakers Clothing culture, textiles. Women's and men's clothing, trousseau, "dressing" the house Interior, living space 1. - Assessment method
- Számonkérés: szóbeli vizsga Examination and evaluation system: colloquium grade. The basic principles of student assessment are laid down in the regulations of the Faculty of Humanities at ELTE, which stipulate that, given the nature of the knowledge and skills imparted, the lecturer shall select the means of assessing student work. The colloquium grade is generally based on the assessment of written and/or oral work, which the student can obtain individually or as a member of a group.
