- Ethnochoreology: dance folkloristics with an anthropological focus Sándor Varga, PhD, Habil. In recent decades, anthropological approach appears more and more prominently in the research questions of Hungarian dance folkloristics. During the course, students can get to know the intersections where the two disciplines meet and collaborate with each other to develop new interpretation options for traditional dance phenomena, thereby exploring the foundations of the ethnochoreological approach. In the first part of the lectures, I present the main topics and results of Hungarian dance folklore studies. In the second part, we will discuss the themes and critical attitude of Western dance anthropology. Thirdly, I present the folkloristic and anthropological usability of the ethnochoreological approach with the help of the analysis of case studies. During the performances, we take time to view the Folk Dance Archive of the Institute for Musicology of HUN-REN BTK.

- The scientific history of Hungarian dance folklore in the European and Hungarian context. The foundations of the geographical-historical approach – 1. The emergence of a holistic approach in Hungarian dance folklore. The last phase of György Martin’s work. The history of dance anthropology in a nutshell. The search for a path in Hungarian dance folklore: anthropological criticism and its domestic reception. The ethnochoreological approach – 1: social issues that appear symbolically at dance events. Presentation of proxemic analysis based on case studies. The ethnochoreological approach – 2: the effect of function on the formal-structural appearance of dances. Presentation of the examination of choreomusical interaction based on case studies. Possibilities of historical research. Methodology of dance field research. The technical toolbox of dance research. The tools used in data collection and analysis and their use. Visit to the Folk Dance Archive
