- Aim: A comprehensive overview of the history of ethnography, its periods, the most important works, directions of interest, theoretical assumptions and debates, all embedded in the historical and cultural-historical context.
- Course content
- 1. The beginnings of interest in the people in the 16th-18th centuries 2. The Romantic era 3. The Enlightenment and the development of ethnography in the first half of the 19th century 4. Classical collections and monographs in the second half of the 19th century 5. positivism and institutionalisation at the end of the 19th century 6. Old and new trends in folklore at the beginning of the 20th century 7. The generation of Hungarian ethnography in the early 20th century 8. Great personalities in folklore studies after World War II 9. The development of social and historical ethnography in the second half of the 20th century 10. New institutions and major enterprises in the 20th century 11.Contemporary developments in ethnography 12. Modern paths in folklore studies

- Final papers during the semester. Oral exam at the end of the semester.
