Learning outcomes
This introductory course familiarises students with how computerised language corpora can be used effectively and easily (1) to study ongoing and past changes in English, varieties of English around the world; (2) to detect and identify medical conditions like Alzheimer’s, political opinion and ideological bias, marketing brand-related sentiments, media coverage foci of current issues, criminal suspects; (3) to help with teaching languages. Basic corpus methods and tools as well as some vital basic statistics will be covered. Students wishing to join are expected to bring along their own laptops/tablets or share a device between them (so that 1 device per 2 participants will be available on average).
Course content
From text to corpus. Corpus types. Social media tools. Sentiment analysis. Corpus tools: web scraping, tagging, search tools. Corpora for studying regional and social dialects of English, changes in English, English as a Lingua Franca and World Englishes. Applications: Politics. Forenics. Medical. Business. Media. Language teaching. Basic Statistics. Visualisation.
Assessment method
§  informed and active participation incl. regular HW (25%) §  term paper (40%) §  test (35%) For each component, a 50% pass is needed for a valid final grade.
