- This course familiarises students with major concepts, schools, approaches and current topics in Sociolinguistics.
- Course content
- Variation. Language and social class. Language and gender. Social networks and communities of practice. Language contact. Pidgin and creole Englishes. Computer mediated communication. Linguistic landscapes. Multilingualism. Language and identity. Language and power. Research methods and data collection methods in sociolinguistics.
- Assessment method
- (1) regular attendence, (2) a home paper of 15 pages, (3) an in-class test, (4) active participation. Assessment on the basis of the previous 4 components.
