- Oktatás célja
- The aim of the lesson is to examine some of the important epic poems of the Early Modern era: Marlowe's Hero and Leander; Shakespeare's Venus and Adonis & The Rape of Lucrece; and Milton's Paradise Lost, alongside/after an exploration of key modern cultural trends and their underlying principles and influence. By basic cultural trends I mean, on the one hand, antiquity and mythology; on the other, Renaissance art and philosophy and humanism; and last but not least, the trends based on a Biblical approach and on medieval and post-Renaissance Christianity. We will read and analyse these 3-4 major epic poems in detail, with the most important textual and artistic manifestations of these basic three cultural trends actively referenced in the background.
- Tantárgy tartalma
- The class will involve a close reading and interpretation of the epic works (which will require reading at home as well), but this reading and interpretation will be preceded by an exploration of the (hopefully enjoyable and informative) cultural background, including the most important (sometimes essential) texts and works of art lined up by the relevant cultural trends of the era (antiquity, the Renaissance and Christianity). By juxtaposing and contrasting images and texts of different trends and ages, we will hopefully gain a fuller picture and thus an active, usable knowledge of epic poems.
