Oktatás célja
The seminar course offers a comparative and pragmatic approach to Shakespearean plays, examining different theatrical productions in Hungary and the UK, encouraging students to think about forms of staging plays and representing questions in the world of theatre. Delving into the theatrical conditions of Shakespeare’s London will be complemented with focusing on contemporary English and Hungarian theatrical reception of Shakespeare’s works.
Tantárgy tartalma
The specific content of the seminar and the updated list of compulsory readings are defined by the instructor for each semester, since the list of Shakespearean plays and performances to be discussed in the specific semester is dependent on numerous factors. In class the students are first familiarised with the staging conditions of Shakespeare’s London, then the discussion of contemporary English and Hungarian performances follow (with the updated list of readings provided in the first class), examining contemporary reception as well as different theatrical methods and approaches. If possible, the participants also attend a current perforance of a Shakespearean play together.
Számonkérés és értékelés
Reading of set texts and participation in discussion are essential. Short presentation(s) on one play, based on original research and/or close reading to introduce one problem/aspect of the play. Final essay (6-8 pp).
