- To introduce students to the history, society and culture of 16th-18th-century England by providing an insight into the cultural history of music. (A) Knowledge Basic knowledge of and practice in methods of intermediality Adequate knowledge to read, understand and analyse English literary texts and cultural phenomena Basic knowledge of literary history and its cultural contexts Familiarity with professional terminology in the given field (B) Skills Students will be able to conduct critical analyses of English literary texts and develop skills in close reading. Students will be able to situate literary texts within a broader, cultural context (C) Attitude Open to ideas and values other than their own. Interested in English literature and culture · Critically reflects on different trends, periods and authors of English literature and cultural history (D) Autonomy and responsibility Takes responsibility for the academic grounding of their interpretations and will be able to formulate independent positions on contested issues. Critically reflects on literary and cultural canons as well as on their own interpretative positions
- Course content
- The course will explore some important chapters of English music between the 16th and 18th centuries, with special emphasis on vocal music and the choral tradition. The sacred music of Thomas Tallis, the impact of the reformation, musical life under the Stuarts, the rise of the Italian opera and its implications as well as Handel's oratorios will be examined in their cultural contexts.
- Assessment method
- In-class test (based on the material of the classes). Oral: the presentation of a chosen topic. Evaluation: contribution to discussions, test and presentation results.
