Learning outcomes
The course will introduce students to the personal or “familiar” essay in Australian writing. A selection of readings from major Australian writers will open windows onto a range of cultural and historical subjects. As well as exploring the themes raised by the essays, we will pay equally close attention to elements of genre and style.
Course content
An organising principle of the course will be the theme of “conversation.” We will explore how the familiar essay has enabled Australia’s writers to conduct a conversation with each other, with their readers, and with the culture. Students will be encouraged to enter the conversation by developing their own skills with the essay.
Assessment method
In-class activity and a home essay will be the basis of the assessment.
Bibliography
In-class activity and a home essay will be the basis of the assessment.
