- Learning outcomes
- The course will introduce students to the personal or “familiar” essay in Australian writing. A selection of readings from major Australian writers will open windows onto a range of cultural and historical subjects. As well as exploring the themes raised by the essays, we will pay equally close attention to elements of genre and style.
- Course content
- An organising principle of the course will be the theme of “conversation.” We will explore how the familiar essay has enabled Australia’s writers to conduct a conversation with each other, with their readers, and with the culture. Students will be encouraged to enter the conversation by developing their own skills with the essay.
- Assessment method
- In-class activity and a home essay will be the basis of the assessment.
- Bibliography
- In-class activity and a home essay will be the basis of the assessment.
