- The compulsory study, based on the subject "Russian literature in the first half of the 19th century" and in line with the professional core subject "Foundation in the history of Russian literature", offers further in-depth knowledge in the field of the poetic works of Turgenev, Dostoevsky, Tolstoy, and Chekhov. The course presents the roots of the careers of Turgenev and Dostoevsky in the literary canons of the middle of the century and their transformations, outlines the development of the artistic careers of the four writers, and sheds light on the genre system of the era through poetic analyses of short prose, epic and dramatic works. The examination of the peculiarities of the artistic thinking embodied in individual works of art, involving lyrical poetry, contributes to the understanding of the main developmental lines in the history of Russian literature belonging to the second half of the 19th century, taking also into consideration intertextuality.
- Course content
- Among the works to be analysed there figure: Dostoevsky: The Brothers Karamazov, Tolstoy: War and Peace, Turgenev: Fathers and Sons, 4 dramatic works by Chekhov; novellas and shor stories by Turgenev, Dostoevsky, Tolstoy, Chekhov. Lyrical poems taken from the examined period and from the material of the intertextual poetics of prose fiction and dramas.
- Assessment method
- Oral or written exam with a five-grade evaluation.
