- The aim of the course is to deepen and professionalise the students' knowledge of Russian literature in the first half of the 19th century, including Russian Romanticism, the main features of the "Natural School" and Realism, the development of the genre system, the poetics of Pushkin, Lermontov, Gogol, Goncharov and the early works of Turgenev, Dostoevsky, which will be understood through interactive, collective thinking, by the interpretations of concrete works.
- Course content
- Topics include: Poetry of the period (Zhukovsky, Batyuskov, Pushkin, Lermontov). Genre variations and systems (lyric poem, narrative poem, verse novel, prose cycle, novel, drama). The correlation of poetry and prose, synthesising genres, intertextuality -- the poetics of the narrative. Typology of Goncharov's novels. Poetics of the fantastic. The theme of the artist and art in the period. Some of the works to be interpreted: А. С. Пушкин: Эгипетские ночи; Цыганы; Н. В. Гоголь: Портрет; Страшная месть; M. Ю Лермонтов: Демон; Ф. М. Достоевский: Двойник; И. С. Тургенев: Гамлет Щигровского уезда; И. А. Гончаров: Обыкновенная история.
