- The aim of the course is to familiarise students of the Spanish Master's programme with the origins and development of modern linguistic thought, as well as with the most influential linguistic models of the 20th and 21st centuries. A) Knowledge Students will have a knowledge and understanding of modern Spanish linguistic terminology; will be familiar with the antecedents, development and main models of modern linguistic thought; will be familiar with the problems of linguistic theory at different levels of language and the analyses and solutions offered. B) Ability Students are able to identify the theoretical problems behind specific linguistic phenomena; are able to critically examine linguistic explanations and models, to justify their opinions on their applicability, advantages and disadvantages; are able to think consciously about the structure of Spanish and other languages. C) Attitude Students are open to the acquisition of new knowledge and skills; aim for continuous self-education using available technologies, among other tools; are interested in the grammar of Spanish and other languages. D) Autonomy and responsibility Students are committed to hard work are able to study autonomously take responsibility for their own work, self- development, achievements and failures
- Course content
- Linguistics as a cognitive science. Linguistics in antiquity and the Middle Ages. Renaissance and the birth of the Romance languages. Comparative linguistics, Indo-European linguistics. European and American structuralism. Generative linguistics (derivational and representational models). Optimality theory. Post-generative trends.

- Written and/or oral exam: grading 1 to 5.
