- The aim of the course is to introduce the normative aspects of Spanish grammar, with particular attention to sociolectal and dialectal variations, while bearing in mind the particular difficulties encountered in teaching Spanish as a second and foreign language. It will deal with phenomena which, according to the academic norm, do not belong to standard language, but which nevertheless occur widely in everyday language use. Some differences between the formal and colloquial registers and dialectal varieties of Spanish will be presented, as well as the influence of other languages and their normative perception. Prerequisites As the course is part of the Master's program in Spanish Language, Literature, and Culture, students are expected to have the following prior knowledge and skills in order to enroll: a level of Spanish equivalent to at least C1 (guest students who are not native Spanish speakers and come from institutions that do not have an IIA with the Department of Hispanic Studies at ELTE are required to present a DELE or SIELE Spanish language examination certificate). proficiency in basic linguistic topics and methodology; knowledge of various phonetic, phonological, morphosyntactic, semantic, sociolinguistic, and dialectological concepts and phenomena Knowledge and skills acquired or expected during the course A) Knowledge Students – know the activities of Spanish language academies and other language institutions; – know the types, development and characteristics of the cultivated linguistic norm and of linguistic phenomena which differ from it; – are familiar with reference works on the cultivated linguistic norm and on phenomena different from the cultivated linguistic norm that can be used in the teaching and learning of Spanish. B) Ability Students – are able to recognise non-standard linguistic phenomena, explain their cause and relate them to the accepted norm; – are able to use manuals and other resources on normative language use in a competent way; – are able to use Spanish fluently, correctly and confidently in the context in which it is used. C) Attitude Students – strive to improve their general and professional language skills, consciously representing the communication standards of the diverse Spanish-speaking area; – are commited to continuous self-education using available technologies and literature, among other tools; – open and interested in the territorial and social diversity of Spanish language phenomena. D) Autonomy and responsibility Students – are committed to intensive learning; – perform learning-related tasks independently; – take responsibility for their own work, development, achievements and failures.
- Course content
- The concept and development of the Spanish language norm. Norm and dialectal variations. Characteristics of colloquial language use. The most common non-standard phenomena at the level of phonetics/phonology, morphology and syntax.
- Assessment method
- The course is a seminar, therefore students' performance is graded on the basis of continuous assessment and evaluation. The main factors through which the evaluation will be made may include: active class work, continuous preparation for classes, oral reports, group project assignments, written papers, tests. Assessment is on a five-point scale, with a pass mark of 60%. A failed final exam may be retaken once during the first week of the examination period. For the current semester, the following tasks are expected to be completed (300 points in total): two partial exams (25 and 50 points respectively) and a final exam (100 points)*; language data collection and processing (30 points); a short presentation on the same linguistic topic (20 points); written version of the topic researched by the student (50 points); regular attendance and active class participation; completion of assignments on time (25 points). *The final exam is based on all written and audio materials distributed during the course, as well as on the students' short presentations. More detailed information will be given by the course tutor in the first session.
